Great Ohio Company and the Vandalia Colony
The Great Ohio Company was chartered in 1768. It was a land speculation, sponsored by colonial leaders such as Ben Franklin. The objective was to obtain a grant from George III of lands along the Ohio River, and to establish a 14th colony encompassing most of modern-day West Virginia and Kentucky. Point Pleasant was proposed as the new capital.
The name Vandalia honored the German heritage of King George and his wife Charlotte, supposedly descended from the Vandals.
